HOW TO DO THE EGYPTIAN WALK OR HAGALLA

If you are reading this, it’s likely that you have been belly dancing for a while already, so you are looking to deepen and amplifying you knowledge.

The Egyptian Walk, or Hagalla, is one of those steps that take time to master. But worry no more, I broke it down step by step so you can fully understand and practise, knowing what you are doing.

It might be that you are just a beginner, but you would like to learn a bit faster –that was me when I started, hihihi. If this is your case, you might prefer to have a look at this other post before: Belly Dance Your First Steps. I’m feeling a bit like a warrior today. Let me explain myself.

Yesterday, a friend of mine was saying on her Instagram that she wanted to stop using the beauty filters in her stories, because when she doesn’t use a filter she sees herself as ugly (even with makeup!). My personal commitment (with myself but also with you) is not using those kinds of filters or Photoshop (the pictures you see from me have a colour filter, but they are not retouched at all).

If there is anything I’m certain of in this life is that I’d like to be an example of naturalness (is this even a word in English?). I mean that I don’t want to hide behind any masks.

Did you also buy the flat tummy lies?

The other day, a student from Bellydance With The Moon (btw, we start a new cycle every month) told me:

THERE IS NO REGULATION IN BELLYDANCE

Anyway, you should know, if you don’t know yet, that in belly dance we haven’t reached an agreement on how to name the steps and movements: walking shimmy, ΒΎ shimmy, Egyptian walk, etc.

This lack of agreement comes from a lack of regulation, which os another topic for another day.

We agree even less on how to do execute the steps or movements: one teacher says to rest on the 4th time, another one to use a waltz timing, the last one to add a little hip twist, etc.

In my opinion, everything is correct unless the opposite is proven –and of course, as long as the movement is safe to do. And since dance is not a science, I think it will remain like this for a looooong time.

Bearing this in mind, today I’d like to share with you how to do the Egyptian Walk. And I’m going to do it in less than 5 minutes. Would you come with me?

Watch the video now.

Video Index:

  • 0:35 – Side to Side hip hits

  • 1:10 – The L shape with you hips

  • 3:15 – Walking with the Hagalla

And now is your turn: What’s the name you use for this thing we just did in the video? How was the Egyptian walk explained to you?. I’m looking forward for your comment, as usual.

By the way, don’t forget to subscribe. What if you just discovered this website, you loved it and you forget the name of the Dance Pandemic project?

Also, I share things in the emails that you won’t find anywhere else.

Thank you for being here today.

Hugs,

Zahida.

Ps, There are a couple of mentions in the video of different tutorials. You can find all of them in my youtube channel.
