THE SECRET TO GRACEFUL AND ELEGANT BELLY DANCE HAND MOVEMENTS

Arms and hand movements are basic when it comes to differentiating different dance styles. For example, the hand movements you would use for flamenco have nothing to do with the movements you would use for Indian dances.

At the same time, arms and hands are usually forgotten. I’ve seen so many amazing belly dancers: spins, glances, legs and feet very well executed, but arms and hands left alone, floppy and far from elegant…

In bellydance, we also have our specific arm and hand movements. We usually move arms and hands softly and in a fluid motion. Fingers are together but not tense, and movement starts in our wrists.

This last thing, the hand movement coming from our wrists, it’s in my opinion the most important and forgotten.

BELLY DANCE HAND MOVEMENT STARTS IN OUR WRISTS

It’s very possible that no one has told you about this just yet, especially if you are still at a beginner level. It’s quite normal in any learning process that everything is out of control. Don’t get frustrated if you don’t manage to get it on the first try.

Just have fun with the process (I repeat this as a mantra).

It is very important that you learn step by step, in little pills, as we do in Bellydance With The Moon.

On top of that, coordination takes its time and needs practice. First, you have to automate the movements to be able to add movement layers afterwards (we talk about coordination in the last week of Bellydance With The Moon).

Just think about virtually stroking the ceiling and floor today, focus on relaxing those hands, and we’ll see tomorrow.

Dancing is not only moving the body — Move your soul as well!
